Originally from Afghanistan, Shukria and her family embarked on a journey of hope and resilience, immigrating to Portland, Maine, as refugees in April 1984. Raised in Portland, she developed a strong connection to her community, which continues to inspire her work today.

Prior to joining the IWC, Shukria dedicated two decades to the field of planning and community development as a City Planner. Her diverse professional background, coupled with her academic achievements, including a dual Bachelor of Science in Biology and Environmental Science and Policy, as well as a Master's in Public Administration from Clark University in Worcester, MA, uniquely position her to address the multifaceted needs of the immigrant population.

Residing in Cape Elizabeth with her husband and four children, Shukria embodies a steadfast commitment to serving others. She thrives on utilizing her array of professional skills to foster holistic development within the immigrant community, ensuring that everyone has the opportunity to thrive.  Shukria's guiding principle is one of inclusivity and solidarity: she firmly believes that there is ample room for everyone, and that by embracing diversity, we can collectively achieve greatness. She eagerly anticipates the opportunity to collaborate with like-minded individuals in nurturing this shared belief and advancing the mission of the Greater Portland Immigration Welcome Center.

In her free time, Shukria enjoys spending quality moments with her family, immersing herself in nature, and exploring new avenues for personal and professional growth.
