Join us at the Portland Public Library during Portland’s First Friday Art Walk for a reception and showcase of the ongoing "Africa to Maine" photo exhibition! The event will be taking place on the lower level of the library and is FREE for all. There will be drinks, food and a live performance from Namory Keita!
This exhibition is being put on in response to a current exhibition at the Portland Museum of Art, titled Outside the Frame: Todd Webb in Africa. This exhibition presents a recently recovered photographic series made by American documentary photographer Todd Webb in 1958. Webb was commissioned by the UN to document emerging industries and technologies in nine African countries (Togo, Ghana, Sudan, Somalia, Zambia, Zimbabwe, Malawi, Tanzania and Kenya). Webb photographed at a critical moment when colonialism and independence were intertwined in the region.
In contrast, IWC’s photos show the inside lives of individuals and families in Africa during the past six decades.
Moreover portrait’s of the photographers who have shared their images with IWC will be shared at the Todd Webb exhibition. These portraits will be on a video loop, and the images will be overlaid with audio of the individuals sharing their stories.
This exhibition has been put in place through IWC in partnership with the Portland Public Library.
