Statement: Protecting the Integrity of the U.S. Asylum System

Dear Community,

It is with deep concern that we address the attempts by lawmakers to critically weaken the United States asylum system and impose new anti-immigrant policies through the recent aid budget proposal. It is our belief that such efforts are unjust and pose a significant risk to the integrity and very purpose of our asylum system. 

Asylum in the U.S. has long been a beacon of hope and a testament to our nation's commitment to providing refuge to those fleeing persecution, violence, and other forms of harm. It is a critical avenue through which individuals can seek protection and rebuild their lives in a country that values human rights and dignity. 

We implore Congress to fully consider the viewpoints of experts, advocates, and impacted communities to ensure that any proposed change to the asylum system will wholly uphold our obligations under international law and the values we hold dear as a nation. It is imperative they strike a balance that strengthens our ability to effectively process asylum claims, while safeguarding the rights and dignity of those seeking protection. 

We urge all in our strong and vibrant community to come together to advocate for asylum seekers and all immigrants. Please join us in calling on Congress to support fair and just asylum and immigration policies.
